USAA Launches Telematics App SafePilot in 10 States

SAN ANTONIO—(April 29, 2021) USAA members are showing an increased interest in behavior- and usage-based insurance programs. To accommodate growing demand, today USAA is announcing the expansion of SafePilot in 10 states.

The new states include Alaska, Arkansas, Iowa, Idaho, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, Montana, New Mexico and Tennessee, with the program now offered in 16 states total.

The USAA SafePilot™ app instructs, inspires and rewards safe driving habits to help keep drivers safe on the road while lowering insurance premiums. Members who enroll in SafePilot are now eligible for initial policy discounts up to 10% for signing up for the program, and continued policy discounts up to 30% for safe driving behaviors.

USAA recently shared that SafePilot enrollments grew over 200% in 2020, and that nearly half of the new policyholders in states where the program was available opted-in to the program.

SafePilot is currently available in Alaska, Arkansas, Arizona, Iowa, Idaho, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, Montana, New Mexico, Ohio, Oregon, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia, and is launching in most states throughout 2021 to accommodate growing demand.

In addition to discounts, members may be eligible for extra savings through bundling their auto and homeowners’ insurance.[1]

Texas, Arizona and Ohio - Participation discount up to 5% for new policyholders enrolled prior to Feb. 13, 2021. Discount up to 10% for new policyholders enrolled after that date. Existing policyholders in OH, and AZ receive participation discount up to 5% if enrolled prior to May 30, 2021 and up to 10% after that date. Existing policyholders in TX receive participation discount up to 5% if enrolled prior to June 8, 2021 and up to 10% after that date. Virginia - Participation discount up to 5% for new policyholders enrolled prior to April 20, 2021, and up to 10% for new policyholders enrolled after that date. For existing policyholders in Virginia, participation discount is up to 5% if enrolled prior to Aug. 23, 2021 and up to 10% after that date. Participation discount expires at first renewal in which the earned driving discount is applied, not to exceed 365 days.

Earned driving discount is offered at renewal and is based on driving behavior of all the rated drivers on the policy. Discount may vary by state and over the life of the policy. Arizona and Ohio – If earned, this discount is up to 20% for policies with renewal effective date prior to May 30, 2021 and up to 30% when earned and renewed as of May 30, 2021. Texas – If earned, this driving discount is up to 20% if the policy renewal effective date is prior to June 8, 2021, but up to 30% when earned and renewed as of June 8, 2021. Virginia – If earned, this driving discount is up to 20% if the policy renewal effective date is before Aug. 23, 2021 and up to 30% when earned and renewed as of Aug. 23, 2021.
